What was your initial response as the authors started to talk about God’s involvement both in the ascent and in the decline of a nation?

Does this challenge your previous view of God’s nature and ways?

My initial response to the book’s view of God’s involvement in both ascent and decline was to totally agree with it, which gave rise to the thought of how I would have viewed it 2 years ago, before we of Congress WBN went through an intensive period of teaching, which I can clearly see prepared us for what was coming.

I had always thought of God being involved in the ascent of a nation but failed to take notice of his involvement in the decline.  By looking at the fall of Ancient Egypt, I now see that He is equally involved in the decline as well.  When the ‘great’ nation began to fall, God did not abandon His followers.  My favorite quote in chapter 2 says “While society was splintering and breaking down, the people of God were becoming more cohesive”.  Through the plagues and the death of the first born, Pharaoh’s power began to crumble and the Israelites were set free. How uplifting that should be for us as believers to read.  It assures me that no matter what tribulations we see in America, God will protect His people.

I recognized that in the past my default position was to gauge success, and even approval from God, based on prosperity (economic success, family blessings, etc.); But I really liked the graphic that showed the Rise and Fall that we see in the external events, countered with the continuous elevation of the purposes of God. That really solidified my thinking system to look beyond the external; it’s giving me increased clarity on world events, and with that making me feel like God is very near and active. I’m feeling very loyal to God and trusting that He is actively acting on His purposes, it’s actually making me feel very secure understanding that God is in control of the Decline.

As Americans, for the most part, we believe God blessed America to get us to where we are today. We see in the Old Testament many times God blessed a nation to accomplish his purpose and cause change. When that was completed those nations no longer had the power or influence. It would be foolish to think God could not do the same to America. Until a few years ago I was one of the foolish. I used to think Gods sovereignty was only for good, to bless. He is in control of it all. Even the “bad stuff” is ultimately for my own good. God has not abandoned us. The Arc of Empires has helped me see God is at work in America, maybe just not like we might want. It has also increased my faith and made me more confident knowing is sovereign in all things.

For those of us raised in the US the measuring rod we are accustomed to using is tied to dollars. We then translate success and the favor of God on our efforts with an increase in our economic standing. To see the hand of God equally leading both ascent and decline requires me to align with His ultimate purposes without any prejudice. When I back up and see the hand of God sovereignly moving in the affairs of the children of Israel in the OT I then can transfer his patterns into the events of today. After reading these chapters I am even more resolved in the stance of “not my will by thine be done” even as it applies to my own land and economic standing.

Especially with the political and economic conditions as they have been over the last 2 elections, there have been many conversations in the office and around the break rooms surrounding the questions of “Where is this country going?” or “What will all of this mean for our kids?”  I’ve heard many express concern or fear about the political decisions that are being made that make the government more invasive into our lives and pocketbooks, bringing socialism and ultimately instability and decline of a great nation.  No candidates or policy makers seem much better than another or have answers to the faltering economic climate or moral decline.

My initial response to reading this book is one of hope and confidence of behind the scenes of all the world events and things unfolding in the nations that it is the same Sovereign God who from a place of unfolding redemption for mankind brings both the rise and decline of every nation. The alignment of the patterns that are described between ancient Egypt and Modern America as parallel systems gives insight and clarity to the big picture and helps me not focus on the day to day burdens, inconveniences or impending crisis.  It secures me even more to know that God is behind the scenes, even in decline that is becoming more apparent, working in a way that is beneficial.  This book gives me points to go back to the discussions at work and bring hope and confidence in a sea of uncertainty and fear.

Understanding God’s involvement in both the ascent and decline of a nation really gives me perspective on the world. It allows me to step back from circumstances in my life and see them correctly - knowing that God truly has a Sovereign plan in mind, and does not show favor to one nation or another. All are subject to His will.

Some initial thoughts that I had, were that, the “prosperity” of a nation is not merely a result of how much access that nation has to resources, or how strong its military presence is. But the prosperity or success of a nation is totally contingent upon God’s ultimate purpose and plan that He has. As the authors pointed out case by case the different experiences in ancient Egypt and compared that to which what is going in modern America; made me fear the Lord at deeper levels and at the same understanding and knowing that none of which is taking place in America is arbitrary or that of random activity, give me hope and faith to continue to simply be on God’s side as we move forward in the days ahead.

My initial impact in reading this section came from an identification with the perspective highlighted in this chapter that sees good things as good, and bad things as negative, rather than seeing all things as inclusive to God. In the past this has been an issue for me both in my personal life, and in dealing with issues affecting larger groups of people that I am a part of, such as family or churches that I have been a part of. Over time, that perspective has changed, and grown into a perspective more in line with the word of God. However reading this book caused me to recognize the absolute key nature of having a correct perspective that isn’t linked to fortune or failure, but rather the beauty and sovereign nature of God in the midst of the coming darkness. It also challenged me to take a more direct look at partnering with God to continue to grow into that correct perspective. As I read the rest of the book, this chapter is the one my mind continued to return to, time and again.

My initial response?
I had a light-bulb moment when I read the line on page 29 in Chapter 6 that states: “God prospered the national economy for His purpose”. I realized in that moment that, even though I had an understanding of God’s sovereignty, I must have developed a mentality throughout my upbringing that HIS PURPOSE was a RESULT. . as if what God wanted only happened because certain events led to it, produced it, it came about because, etc. I had to make a slight shift in my mind to recognize that the TRUE reality that I live in is that God’s purpose is set, and He is involved in every event, circumstance or crisis that allows us to move forward and closer to accomplishing that purpose. When I acknowledge that yes, God is redemptive and He’s after people’s hearts and lives, I start seeing everything - even that which seems “bad” - as the perfect option to get us where He wants us. Nothing is random, everything is moving towards that purpose! In His sovereignty, everything that happens is GOOD because we are moving towards the ultimate point of GREATNESS - finally completing the purpose He’s been after for years and years. The best part is that we get to be apart of it because He wants us to!
